Abstract
Purpose: This is a descriptive study on nurses¡¯ perception and reporting of elder abuse.

Method: Data were collected from 252 nurses working at hospitals using a structured questionnaire during the entire period of September 2010.

Results: Nurses¡¯ perception of elder abuse was notably high in order of physical, verbal, financial abuse, negligence and emotional abuse. Nurses who had never reported elder abuse were more than those who had such an experience, and those who did not know where to report elder abuse were more than those who knew it. Majority of nurses had never attended an elder abuse program, but recognized the importance of developing relevant programs related to elder abuse. The contents that they expected most to be included in such programs were identification of cases of elder abuse and how to cope with it.

Conclusion: The results of this study will serve as useful information in developing seminar or training programs for nurses that will address nurses¡¯ accurate assessment and identification of cases of elder abuse. Nurses play a significant role in supporting the elders and their respective families in coping with this situation. Therefore, programs that focus on effective coping method and proper counseling of elders and their guardians are highly recommended.
